Become a Citizen Leader in Sustainability

Medford prides itself on its small town charm, its unique history and its rural character, located in the midst of the New Jersey Pinelands. This is what has attracted people to Medford for decades now. Come to this free workshop on January 9th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Medford Memorial Community Center to learn how to protect and improve these important qualities. You will also learn the tools and techniques to become effective and engaged local advocates for Pinelands preservation in your community.

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance and The Citizens Campaign are pleased to offer this free workshop to learn about best practices for creating a sustainable community and how to get involved in your local government. Topics to be covered will include: mixed-use and walkable neighborhoods; energy conservation and renewable energy; water quality and conservation; stormwater management and low-impact development; and preservation of historic and natural areas. Participants will also learn how to advocate for sustainable communities as a citizen journalist, appointed official, or citizen legislator.

Jaclyn Rhoads, Director for Conservation Policy with the Pinelands Preservation Alliance and Renee Koubiadis, Assistant State Campaign Director with the Citizens Campaign will lead this discussion. “It is critical for Medford residents to be involved in the development and operation of their community,” said Jaclyn Rhoads, “A community is only sustainable if it has community members supporting the concept. With resident involvement, a community will become more efficient and appealing in the future.”

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance supports sustainable community design and development and using resources more efficiently, because these measures will reduce the burden on the Pinelands natural resources and ensure its protection and the protection of resources globally.

The Citizens Campaign, founded in 1998, works to cultivate a culture of service and develop a new generation of leaders – leaders who put service over personal gain. We give people a tool kit to get results on issues they care about. Through live events and online classes, The Citizens Campaign has educated thousands of New Jerseyans in how to navigate the power structure of government and to exercise leadership beginning with their own hometowns. The Citizens Campaign educates citizens how to get results through 5 powerful nonelected leadership positions, as citizen legislators, political navigators, citizen journalists, political party committee people, and appointed officials. The Citizens Campaign led the successful fight for the adoption of pay-to play protections at the state level. New Jersey now has the strongest state pay-to-play reform law in the nation.

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) was founded in 1989 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization to advocate for preservation of the New Jersey Pinelands and to educate the public about the extraordinary natural and cultural resources of this unique region. PPA is the only statewide environmental organization whose sole mission is the preservation of the 1.1 million acres of the Pinelands.
