CLEAN UP MEDFORD COMMONS

As Spring approaches, the Medford Commons Board is planning a Spring Clean up of the Grounds around the Commons.   We are asking as many residents as possible to join in the fun. Come out and meet your neighbors, and work for a worthy cause – Preparing Medford Commons for the Spring and Summer months. We will gather near Lake 2 on Saturday, April 13 at 9:00 a.m. (rain date April 20) to pick up Gum balls; twigs; sticks, etc.  Garbage bags will be offered and make sure you have your garden gloves on.  Debbie Deitwheiler, Dave Weisman and Ted Jamison will be leading this event.  Coffee, juice boxes and water will be provided. Stickers for a “Job Well Done” for the kids.

WE BECOME A COMMUNITY WHEN WE ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR A COMMON CAUSE.

To respond and let us know you will be participating, please email debi@debidetwiler.com by March 22nd and indicate your name, phone, number of adults and number of children you will be bringing.  Thank you!

Medford Township: Reminder to Dog Owners

In order for everyone to safely enjoy our parks, open spaces, and walking trails, Township officials would like to offer a reminder that, per Chapter 66 of the Medford Township Administrative Code, dogs must be kept on a leash.  The only exception is the identified off-leash area in Freedom Park known as Duke’s Dog Run.

Also, dog owners are required under this same Ordinance to remove their pet’s waste by placing it in a suitable bag and depositing it in a trash receptacle.  For your convenience, pet waste bag dispensers are located in our parks.  Pet waste is not only offensive, but it can pollute waters, as it is washed by rain and melting snow and ice into storm drains that carry it into our lakes and streams.

We thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

Leaf collection is now completed.  There will NOT be another collection until late 2013 (no spring leaf collection).  Any leaves piled in the street, is a violation of the state storm water management regulations, and must be removed by the homeowner.  Failure to do so may result in penalties.
Brush collection schedule is being changed from the previously announced Feb/Mar.  Brush collection is now scheduled to start in April.  When the zone by zone schedule is set, it will be posted on the Township website.
New (Vendor) Trash Trucks? – Some residents may have noticed the trash collection vendor emptying cans by hand into rear loading trash trucks, or by other semi-automated methods.  This is a temporary situation – the vendor had a delay in receipt of the new trucks they purchased for use in Medford, and had some mechanical problems with automated collection trucks temporarily being used.  Despite the vendor equipment issues, trash has been collected mostly as scheduled – and at no added cost to the Township for any extra manpower the vendor needs to get the cans emptied.  As a reminder, any service questions should first be directed to Casworth at 856-848-3505Container repairs/replacements continue to be handled by Medford Public Works (609)-654-2608 x322 or email jscherf@medfordtownship.com.
Bulk Collection must be scheduled by Monday 12:00 noon prior to the Wednesday of your pick up week. To schedule please e-mail BulkPickup@medfordtownship.com or call Judy Scherf at 609-654-2608 ext. 322. There are restrictions such as no construction debris, appliances, no metals, no bags of trash. For any other information please call Judy Scherf at 609-654-2608 ext. 322.
Trash container reminders:
 1) Please keep the lids closed – if it is broken, contact Public Works for repair/replace – landfill tipping fees are expensive, no need to waste tax dollars dumping rain water at the landfill.  No holes are to be drilled in the bottoms of the cans.
 2) When placing cans at the curb, please leave 2-3 feet of space between cans, recycle containers, mailboxes, trees, signposts, etc., to allow drivers to easily and efficiently grab the cans with the claw arm.  Same goes for recycle containers.  Curbside collection of recyclables continues to be done by the County, not the Township, or new trash vendor.

Changes to Medford Trash Service

Medford Township has outsourced the weekly curbside trash collection.
Details of the change to outsourced trash collection are being finalized and will be mailed to all residents. Here is a general idea of why the change, and generally what the changes will be. Details will be forthcoming from the Township.

The contractor, Casworth Services, Inc., was chosen by a competitive bid in the fall, and will begin serving Medford Township on Jan 8, 2013.

Due to the fact that Casworth will complete all trash collection in Medford in 4 days each week vs the current 5 day collection schedule, there will be some changes to the collection schedule. The details of the schedule changes are being finalized by the Township, and will be mailed to all affected residents when they are completed.

The outsourcing was done to achieve cost savings for the trash collection operation.
Unfortunately, one down side of this is that there will be a reduction in the Department of Public Works force. A total of 4 DPW personnel will be affected. Other DPW personnel that will no longer be collecting trash will be reassigned to other DPW duties.

What changes/what doesn’t & added services/benefits:

-Casworth will collect trash using automated trucks similar to what Medford uses now, and residents will continue to use the same trash totes they have.

– Costs for trash collection will be known for the next for 5 years. The contract with Casworth is for 5 years, with minimal increases over the 5 years. Year 5 total cost will be only $4,080 greater than year 1. Tipping fees at the County Landfill are charged to the Township separate from the Casworth trash collection service fees.

– The contract with Casworth includes bulk trash collection twice per month at curbside. Bulk will be collected on Wed. Half of the town will have bulk collected on the 1st and 3rd Wed., the other half will have bulk collected on the 2nd and 4th Wed. The mailing to residents will identify which areas are collected on which weeks.

– Casworth will be collecting Christmas trees 2 weeks in Jan. Information will be in the Township mailer.

– Casworth will be using new trucks that run on compressed natural gas, so will be quieter .

– Hours at the Township garage (“dump”) will be reduced to the 3rd Saturday of each month, since there should be less need for residents to go there with bulk trash being collected curbside 2 times per month. And with the DPW reduction, the limited staff will be better utilized elsewhere than monitoring the garage yard. Details of times and limited other access for specific items will be provided in the mailing from the Township.
